I have good kids. Why should I hire someone to check on them?
All kids have to deal with peer pressure. Why not make it easier for them to say no to the negative peer pressure and encourage good decision-making? It can offer you peace of mind too as we can't always know when something or someone is going to tempt them to do the wrong thing.
What happens if you check on my kids and there is an alcohol party going on? How do you handle it?
During my initial consultation with clients, we discuss the "what if's" ahead of time. My recommendation is that the police be called if there is underage alcohol or other illegal activity going on. The homeowner is responsible for any activity going on at their home, whether they are there or not. It has been my experience that parents who are willing to have a realistic consequence, such as calling the police and letting the offenders deal with real life consequences, have far fewer problems to deal with in this area. The teens are aware that this would be the result and are further encouraged to stay away from this type of situation. There are and have been civil lawsuits in our area against homeowners/parents for activity that resulted in injury and/or death from kids drinking and driving or other similar actions.
Can you give me updates while I'm away?
You bet! I can e-mail or phone you with any updates you'd like to have. You are also welcome to contact me while away, as many of my clients do, to double-check on things or let me know of any change of plans.
We usually ask family or friends to check on the house, pets, and kids. What's wrong with that?
That's great if you have someone staying inside your home. If not, there's many reasons. Family, friends, and neighbors can be very busy. A lot of my clients don't want to inconvenience them. When someone is not literally staying in your home, they do not know what is going on inside.
When checking on your home, I am trained to know what to look for to make the home look "lived in" and like someone is still there. I am double-checking windows and door locks and looking for signs of tampering. I know what would look attractive to a burglar and try to make your home less inviting to criminals.
While checking on teens, it's a must to have someone checking inside the home, even during late hours. Teens are so resourceful that it's vital to try and be one step ahead of them. My clients have found that having Grandma check on them doesn't work the best as Grandma doesn't think her grandkids are going to do anything wrong while she is in charge. Grandma also goes to bed early and the kids know this. The neighbor could be put in an awkward situation too especially if they aren't sure if something is going on and then have to decide whether to go in and look like they don't trust your kids or don't know what to look for. Just looking for extra cars around the house or a lot of kids going in and out doesn't cut it. The kids are definately smart enough to figure out they should park a ways away and go to a different door after dark.
I'm going in with a key and doing what I call a 'perimeter check'. I can check every room to 'make sure all windows and doors are secure' while also making sure no one is there that shouldn't be there and your teen is safe. They can also blow into my Alco Sensor verifying 100% that they have not consumed any alcohol and proving that they are being responsible and safe. What a great report you could get when you get home. What peace of mind you could have while away from home!
Do you have any medical training?
You bet. I am a certified First Responder and can deal adequately with any medical emergencies. You could also fill out a Medical Emergency Form so I can give consent for any medical treatment needed in case of an emergency.
Do you have animal medical training?
No, I do not. I do have all your pet's information though including what vet you would want me to call in case your pet is sick or there is an emergency.
Is it safer for my pet to be at home or in a kennel? How about my home?
It depends on your pet. If your pet prefers to be at home, it is safer for it then to be at home. Sometimes pets are stressed out when they are in a kennel type of situation. Some pets are healthier at home also due to kennel cough and other health conditions. Your home is also safer from intruders when pets are home, especially dogs. The barking would deter most criminals from wanting to take the chance not knowing how your pet would react.
How much notice do I need to give for your services?
Well, it varies depending on how busy I am, obviously the sooner the better. However, I try to stay as flexible as possible as I was sometimes forced to work over my shift at the last minute and understand that sometimes you can't help it.
